How many coolers can be installed
Before considering how to lubricate a cooler in a computer or laptop, we should talk a little about what it is and what it is for. The cooler is a fan. Its task is to blow certain nodes of the system unit and improve their cooling through more efficient heat dissipation.
The number of coolers may vary. Depending on the assembly and the device itself, they vary in number from 1 to 3. Cooler usually on a laptop — it blows on the chipset and blows air out through the radiator grille. This is due to the size of this technique.

A desktop PC, unlike a mobile device, is not constrained by size, so here you can put more productive hardware that generates more heat. Logically, effective cooling requires a powerful cooler or several weak ones on different components. Usually in the system unit you can find three fans — on the power supply, on the CPU and on the video card. In addition, cooling is sometimes installed on the motherboard, hard drive or RAM, but experts consider this to be stupid. There is no expediency in such actions, since the functions of the cooler are to remove heat from the “hottest” nodes, and these are the processor, power supply and video card.
How the cooler works
The device of the cooler is slightly different from the fan. There is also an impeller and an axis, but unlike a conventional fan, which has a motor that drives the axis with an impeller, the cooler is arranged a little differently. Inside there is a magnet and a coil (that is, in fact, there is an electric motor inside the fan itself). When current is applied, phenomenon of electromagnetic inductionwhich drives the blades.
In any device where there are mechanical components (in this case, the axis and the impeller), bearings are provided. To prevent wear, the parts are lubricated with oil, which forms an oil film during rotation. Over time, the oil evaporates — this leads to the fact that the cooler in the laptop is noisy, and this is one of the signs that it’s time to lubricate it.
When to Lubricate the Cooler
About when you need to lubricate the cooler of a laptop and a computer, it was said above. The main sign that the lubricant has evaporated is the appearance of extraneous noise. In addition, it is worth thinking about lubrication in the following cases.

- After cleaning the PC and replacing the thermal paste on the processor, the device continues to get very hot. It is likely that the original cause of the temperature increase was caused precisely by the incorrect operation of the fan, and not by overheating of other components.

Important! As the oil evaporates, the rotating parts are subjected to faster wear and this is accompanied by an increase in the noise level. Cooling efficiency is reduced due to the fact that the blades rotate more slowly. It is also probable that the unit is completely broken.
How to choose a lubricant
Obviously, it is possible to lubricate the cooler on a video card or any other node only with the help of suitable substances. The first thing that comes to mind is oil. It is unlikely that anyone will decide to use the products used for cooking for these purposes, but still it should be announced at the moment: they will not work, as they will completely ruin the fan. Required for lubrication use special oils.
- Machine oils are synthetic and semi-synthetic.
- Oils for electrical equipment and sewing machines, clippers.
- Lubricants for bearings.
- Special silicone lubricants created directly for PC.
There are other substances that can theoretically be used as a lubricant — lithol, grease, but they tend to thicken, which is clearly not suitable for a cooler. Such products are used to lubricate those devices that are not often set in motion, such as door hinges. The cooler rotates frequently and at high speeds.
Important! Sometimes on the forums you can read advice that graphite grease is suitable. This is not true, since it is designed for mechanisms with an average load, and in addition, it conducts electricity well, which can cause a short circuit.
How to lubricate a cooler
For lubrication, disassemble computer cooler. This is not particularly difficult. In order to remove the noise of the cooler with the help of lubricant, you will need a screwdriver, cotton swabs or a microfiber cloth, alcohol (alcohol-containing substances), a match, and adhesive tape.
Advice! Before proceeding with lubrication, it will not be superfluous to install software for measuring temperature. This will make it clear whether the actions have brought a positive result, or the problem is that the cooler needs to be replaced, as it is faulty.
In a laptop
It was mentioned above that a laptop is usually equipped with one fan, so we will first give the lubrication procedure for it. It is also suitable for a PC, but comments will be given below on the features of lubrication on a computer.
You can get to the cooler by removing the cover at the bottom of the device, removing the RAM, hard drive, disconnecting the Wi-Fi module and the drive, if they are available in this assembly.
After that follows flip the gadget with the keyboard up and remove it. This is done with a thin object (a scalpel will do). The keyboard is fastened with latches, which should be carefully picked up and removed from the grooves. There can be two development options here: you can apply lubricant without removing the cooler, or you can first separate it. The first option is good because it will require fewer actions, but at the same time, it will not work to check how things are with the thermal paste on the chipset, as well as clean it. Therefore, it is still recommended to remove the cooler.
- To do this, the power is separated and the bolts are unscrewed. The cooler is fixed with copper flat tubes, which serve to remove heat from the video card and chipset. They are also bolted and numbered. It is extremely important to unscrew them in the order indicated by the numbers.
- When the fan is unhooked, it should be carefully clear of dust — for this, a fan, a can of compressed air, a cotton swab are suitable. You need to clean both the body and the blades. If the last cleaning was carried out a very long time ago, then on the blades there may be not only dust, but also hair or animal hair. All debris must be removed.
- When the case is cleaned, you need to find a sticker on it. Hidden underneath rubber round stopper. It should be carefully removed. It is extremely important not to damage it, as it prevents the oil from flowing out when it heats up and begins to expand.
- Now you need to apply new oil. It is best to use a match for these purposes. No more than 3 drops should be dripped. Oil can not be used – too much oil may leak out. Then it will have to be removed, which is not so simple.
- After applying the oil, you need to slowly turn the blade along the axis to make sure that the oil is distributed over the surface.
- Put the cap back in place and re-glue it with a sticker. If it does not hold, then you can use tape. The sticker should not be thrown away, it may be necessary to change the cooler if necessary — it contains information useful for buying a new one.
- At the end of lubrication, it is necessary to install the cooler in place along with the cooling tubes. It is obvious that beforehand change thermal paste and remove dust from the remaining nodes of the laptop.
Important! The bolts should be tightened in the reverse order, that is, from 8 to 1. In this case, they should first be strung and then completely tightened. If you do not follow this rule, then you may encounter the fact that the device is very noisy. And the problem is not that the fan is lubricated incorrectly or does not work correctly, but in the wrong assembly.

From the point of view of the lubrication method for the system unit, there are no significant differences. The procedure is the same as described above. At the same time, the easiest way to clean the processor fan in the computer is — it is directly accessibleyou just need to remove the cover of the system unit. Unlike a laptop, the fan here stands directly on the processor, or rather, on the radiator.

The next moment of lubrication is fan processing on the power supply and video card. There are no special differences here, but the fan can be hidden under the cover (in the case of the power supply — inside the block itself), which means that you have to unscrew more bolts to get to it.
Important! The lubrication point can be both above and below, then the fan will need to be removed additionally. Everything is bolted on without any tricks.

Sometimes it happens that the power supply cooler noisy even after lubrication. This suggests that a more serious breakdown has occurred. In this case, you can go to a service center to try to repair it, or buy a new one, which will be more appropriate. Some craftsmen decide to completely disassemble the fan by removing the coil with the winding, the magnet, and carry out various repair manipulations. Whether it is worth going for such tricks is up to each user to decide independently. The fact is that such actions can have the opposite effect — the fan will work even worse.
Sometimes it happens that the cooler does not spin or makes noise, and at the same time the user finds out during disassembly that there is no sticker, and it is not clear how to get to the axis. This situation occurs most often with video cards GeForce. Such fans are called non-separable, and, as the name implies, there are no options for lubrication.
