It would seem that connecting a home theater should not cause any difficulties for a modern person. In practice, there may be certain problems with both video and sound. In addition, you need to know which cable should be used in each particular case. How to connect a home theater correctly? There are several rules.
What is a home theater made of?
So, you have purchased an lg home theater or any other. Most often it includes the following set of equipment:
- receiver;
- DVD player;
- speaker system (most often five-channel);
- cable set.
Connecting a home theater is not particularly difficult, you just need to correctly connect all the connectors, taking into account the color and letter markings.
Users note that when a home theater is connected to LG Smart TVs, the sound quality improves significantly. It is only necessary to use fiber optic cable. The sound is split into 5 channels, creating a surround effect comparable to professional cinema systems.
Connection methods
At the very beginning, it is worth focusing on the following fact. Many models of equipment when switching require disconnection from the network. Especially if they are connected to each other with an HDMI cable.
The first rule before starting work sounds like this: all appliances, TV, set-top box, acoustics must be disconnected from the network.
HDMI
Unfortunately, older TVs often lack an HDMI port. But modern models may have several. The HDMI interface is called digital-to-analog for a simple reason: audio and video data are transmitted over a single cable. Moreover, the latter are transmitted in high quality digital format.
The algorithm for connecting a home theater is simple:
- in a set-top box or other playback device, the cable is connected to the port marked OUT;
- the other end of the cable is inserted into the TV port.
To start watching, use the Source button on the TV remote control to select the port in which the HDMI cable is plugged in. For some receiver models, this is a strictly defined connector. Therefore, it does not hurt to first look at the instructions for the device.
Now you need connect TV to external speakers. It connects to the interface that the TV has. It can be analog tulips or a digital optical port. The latter is recommended if you want to get the best sound quality.
When connecting external acoustics, it is useful to refer to the instruction manual for its receiver. The information in it will help to correctly switch channels. That is, do not connect the center speaker of the surround sound system in place of the side speaker or mix up the rear and front speakers.
Fiber optic cable
Optical cable as an audio transmission channel has already been mentioned in the previous version of switching. There is only one drawback of this method of broadcasting: only audio data. It can be successfully used for external acoustics.
When using fiber optics, you need to connect one end of the cable to the output port of the TV and the other end to the home theater receiver. Usually this is enough. Acoustics will automatically detect a connection to the optical port and start working with its data. Audio is transmitted digitally multichannel audio.
Fiber has both pros and cons. Undoubted advantages include immunity to interference and high quality sound transmission. And the disadvantage for the end user can be the fragility of the cable and the relative sensitivity of the port and connector to damage and contamination.
coax
Coaxial cable allows you to transmit multichannel audio to home theater. The speed of this channel is lower than optics. The cable is durable and reliable. But it will not be possible to completely get rid of the influence of interference. The coax port is similar to the antenna port, except for the threads on the outside of the barrel connector.
To connect the acoustics to the TV, it is enough to screw the coaxial end connectors on the TV output connector and the audio input receiver. The cable is thick, durable, but it bends without much effort.
There is another advantage to this connection method. A screwed coax connector is almost impossible to accidentally disconnect, dirt does not get into it.
RCA cable
An analog cable with connectors familiar to everyone — tulips at the ends can become the only alternative when connecting, so to speak, devices of different ages. A home theater from a long time ago may simply not have other interfaces. Analog ports come in handy when connecting active acoustics. The user can independently build his own home theater using several separate sets of speakers.
Most TVs have analog ports as a means of backwards compatibility. Each cable carries one channel. Accordingly, an old TV may have a single mono output port. Or a whole comb of a modern model for multi-channel surround sound.
To connect a home theater to a TV, it is enough to connect the analog ports together. They have different color coding, so it is very difficult to confuse something. The same is done if you have to use, for example, an old VCR as a video source.
The analog wire has a huge drawback. In addition to sensitivity to interference, there is a limitation in the form of a maximum length of one and a half meters.
SCART comb
The SCART interface is now obsolete. It transmits a picture in the form of an analog signal divided into color channels. Audio is in stereo only. Therefore, on few modern TVs there is a SCART comb. As well as on optical disc players or multimedia players.
However, for switching old equipment SCART may be an acceptable option. It allows you to get tolerable picture quality and stereo sound. Connecting the player to a TV is not difficult. The combs cannot be inserted into the slots incorrectly. But as already mentioned, the user will not have access to multi-channel sound and other delights of modern media.
TV settings
For everything to play and sound, you need to set up the TV. Firstly, choose the correct portto which the playback device is connected. Secondly, switch the sound from the built-in speakers to external speakers. How to do this, you should look in the instructions for a specific TV model. Some modern models independently choose the working interface when a connection is detected on a particular audio port.
PC connection
The lg brand home theater is easy to connect to a PC. To do this, you can use a special cable, which has a tulip-type plug on one side, and a mini-jack on the other. Connection to a PC is made through the green port as follows.
- We connect the PC system unit and the DVD player with a cable. In this scheme, the player is a sound amplifier, so we connect a passive subwoofer with speakers to it.
- We configure the PC sound card, choosing the optimal sound parameters.
- At the last stage, the PC video card is configured depending on the preferences of the owner.
Phone connection
Mobile phones today can act as flash drives: modern gadgets can hold up to 64 GB of information. Thanks to this, many music lovers keep their favorite tracks on their phones. You can use your home theater speakers to listen to stored music. How to connect a mobile device to it?
To output sound from a phone to a home theater, you need a wire that has two tulip sockets on one end and a MiniJack plug on the other. The former are plugged into the AUX sockets on the cinema, while the latter is connected to the headphone input on the phone.
The two tulips on the wire are marked with different colors: white and red. They represent different audio channels (left and right).
Connecting your home theater to your TV, PC or phone is easy. You just need to understand the specifics of the connection, and as a result, all work will take a minimum of your time.
