A layer in Photoshop is like a stack of transparencies that are stacked on top of each other. One film tones in a certain color, the other one raises the contrast, the third one changes the sharpness, the fourth one adds a new object to the photo. The result is an image consisting of fragments superimposed on each other. It looks like a 3D children’s book, in which a cardboard hare jumps out of voluminous bushes.

We tell you what a layer is in Photoshop, explain how to use layers, answer the most important questions in a blitz format, and at the end we give a cheat sheet with hot keys.
