All children start reading at some point. This is a special stage of growing up. They feel delighted that they have learned to do what only adults and older children can do. At such moments, the world becomes different. Unfamiliar signs turn into understandable meanings. Today we’ll talk about how to choose books for the first independent reading and instill in your child a love of reading.

Many children from the very first books do not like to read. This activity seems to them a waste of time, they find all sorts of excuses, how to quickly read a page or two and do something more interesting. Why is this happening? There are 2 big reasons!

It is difficult for a child to read. When the baby has just learned to read and has read a few words, enthusiastic parents expect that since the child is already reading individual words, it means that he will be able to overcome the book, but more. But in fact, it turns out that the baby does not yet have the appropriate skill. Reading words and reading books are different intellectual activities. Reading books requires being able to follow the plot from page to page, which means that too much focus on reading the words themselves detracts from the plot. Therefore, often children do not remember what they read. And now this exorbitant heaviness and tension fall on the shoulders of the child, and he no longer likes to read.

The kid is not interested in what he reads. Let’s face it. «Gingerbread Man», «Three Bears» and other fairy tales that children have heard a million times, and now they have been divided into syllables, are not interesting. You will see this when the child tries to close the book quickly. Five-year-olds are not interested in fairy tales for toddlers. Not because they are not interested in reading at all, but they are not interested in WHAT they read. Or, for example, incomprehensible stories in which you have to guess. Children immediately begin to worry that they simply do not read well enough, and therefore did not understand. All these doubts and irrelevant stories do not bring closer, but rather alienate the child from reading books. It would seem a trifle, but no.

It is important not just to know why children do not read, but to sincerely try to understand how to help maintain the desire to read and enjoy the process itself. In order not to initially turn reading into something mandatory.

A lot of general advice can be given — be an example and read in front of children, arrange a cozy place for reading and set aside certain times for this. Of course, all this is for the good, but there is something without which reading will not be an internal need. So what is the secret?

  1. Ability to read. Such reading gives self-confidence and a sense of success to every child. He will definitely want to return to these feelings and sensations. That is why children are so happy when they read a thin book entirely at a time. They get the result here and now, which inspires them to read more. And they are ready to read many different books that come easily to them. Children instantly express their delight from a finished, understandable and interesting book to their parents or friends in the form of a natural retelling, simply by sharing their impressions. Here is the development of speech without the terrible, dry and lifeless word «retell!». It is very important that the first books are of the complexity that pleases the child. And you can understand this with the naked eye, quietly watching from the side.
  2. Gradual complication. Children are very smart and intuitively understand what they need at the moment, and strive for it. The concern of some parents that children will remain uneducated with simple books and will not read A.S. Pushkin, unjustified. After reading many books of the same complexity and making sure that everything works out, the children themselves will definitely move on to books a little more difficult. Nature is such that a person has an inherent desire for development, subject to successful experience. The main thing is that the necessary books are in sight and they could easily be taken on their own. There is a time for everything, and it will definitely come if you give the child the opportunity to go through the reading path at their own pace, gradually from level to level.
  3. Interesting reading. Children, like adults, are interested in books on a topic that excites them. At preschool age, children have individual hobbies, and there is also something that all children of 3-7 years old like, because such is the psychology of a child of this age. These are stories about children and their everyday real life. Socialization comes first. Children enjoy reading books about children like themselves. About those life situations that they themselves encounter in life. By identifying themselves, they feel part of society and learn from examples about possible interactions. Everything you need is absorbed from the simple first books.

These three very important points should be considered when choosing the first books for independent reading. Even then, children will fall asleep with a book under their pillow, take it with them on a trip, and just read when they want. With such books, children want and share their impressions with loved ones and talk on various topics. Learning happens by itself. To help parents, so as not to look for every suitable book, teacher Irina Poperyokova created a special series of books “I read myself!”.

And when the child has mastered reading in his native language and wants to try to read something in English, then in the same easy way, from simple to more complex, he can master the first reading in a foreign language.

For the process of language acquisition to be effective, an integrated approach is needed: listening, speaking, writing and reading in the target language. Before children move on to reading adapted classical or modern works, they will already learn to perceive English books in the simplest books by levels. Then reading the detective stories of Agatha Christie in the original is just around the corner. Readers for life!
