How to choose a robot vacuum cleaner?

Robotic vacuum cleaners have gradually become part of our everyday life, now they are in great demand. In this regard, manufacturers offer models of different cost and functions: more than a thousand of them are sold on Wildberries alone. It is not easy to make a choice in such a case. We tell you what you should pay attention to when choosing a smart vacuum cleaner and how not to regret the purchase.

Why do you need a robot vacuum cleaner?

Often, work does not allow you to devote much time to cleaning. After a day at the office, you want to relax, and not spend energy on household chores. In this case, a smart vacuum cleaner helps: it will remove dust and dirt from the floor. You only need to give him a command.

In what other situations will a smart assistant come in handy?

  • Do you or a family member have a dust allergy?

  • Have pets

  • The windows of your apartment face the road, and you often open them

  • I just don’t like vacuuming

What are robot vacuum cleaners?

There are three types of vacuum cleaners: for dry cleaning, for wet cleaning and combined — they combine both functions. Such vacuum cleaners are preferred most often, since you do not have to buy two devices at once. First, they collect dust, and then wipe the floor with a damp microfiber cloth.

Combined vacuum cleaners have separate tanks for water and dust. It is desirable that they are capacious, otherwise they will have to be emptied several times during the operation of the robot. Now many manufacturers are increasing the volume of tanks. For example, the Okami U100 Plus brand model has 600 and 360 ml containers — they are enough to clean a large apartment or house.

Robots for wet cleaning are called floor polishers, they spray water on the floor and then wipe it with a roller or other nozzles. Their main task is to clean surfaces, and therefore they may not be able to cope with carpet cleaning or animal hair.

Power of robotic vacuum cleaners

This is an engine parameter: the higher its power, the better the robot will suck up debris. For budget models, it is usually small, since a good engine is expensive. In this case, we advise you to choose what you want from the vacuum cleaner. If you only need to collect dust, then power from 1000 Pa is enough. Pet owners should focus on a higher level of suction — from 2000 Pa.

Some models can work in enhanced mode, but are inexpensive. Such is the Panda EVO from the Panda brand. Its power range of 1500-2150 Pa is enough for thorough cleaning, and the brush with a safe blade will simplify the cleaning process.

Battery for Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Typically, lithium-ion batteries are installed in robots. They last longer, charge quickly and hold a charge well. The battery determines how long it takes the robot to clean up. Some models are able to clean two hours or more, others — no more than 40 minutes. The increased battery capacity is useful if it is important for you to clean the entire apartment at once. Otherwise, you will have to run the vacuum cleaner several times a day so that it cleans each room separately.

Whatever you decide, choose a capacity of at least 2500 mAh.

What is a turbo brush for?

In vacuum cleaners, the central brush plays an important role: in addition to collecting dust, it also captures debris. With it, it will be easier for the robot to cope with crumbs or grains.

However, there are also robotic vacuum cleaners without a turbo brush. This is considered to be the best option for collecting wool and hair from the floor, as the hair accumulates on the brush and is rather difficult to clean afterwards. Now everything is changing: manufacturers are developing special brushes with anti-winding (for example, Okami’s V-Shape 3.0), and they are much easier to clean. Therefore, it is better to choose a robot with a turbo brush: it will definitely pick up all the debris from the floor. In addition, without it, it will not work to thoroughly clean the carpets.

The side brushes are also worth mentioning: they sweep the dust out of the corners and carry it to the suction nozzle. Usually there are two of them, but in some models only one can be installed. The robot vacuum cleaner will clean up well with one, but it will take a little more time for it.

What are navigation systems

There are different navigation systems. The main ones can be distinguished:

  • Mechanical collision sensors

They are installed in the simplest models. A robot with such sensors will detect obstacles through a collision with them. So you definitely have to keep an eye on such a robot vacuum cleaner.

  • Optical

With them, a smart vacuum cleaner will not crash into objects, but no more.

  • Gyroscope

It is placed in the device so that it determines its coordinates and moves according to the scheme — usually it is a snake.

  • Ultrasonic

With their help, the robot will move around the rooms by itself, as it will be able to find doorways.

  • infrared

Needed to determine the height and distance. If your house has stairs, then choose a vacuum cleaner with such sensors: it will stop in front of the steps and will not fall.

  • Lidar

The most advanced navigation system. The laser rangefinder helps the robot perfectly navigate the room and create its virtual map. The resulting schemes automatically appear in a special mobile application. We advise you to choose a smart vacuum cleaner with lidar. Such models will work completely autonomously.

Additional functions

In addition to the basic characteristics, many robotic vacuum cleaners have other useful features. Consider the most common of them.

  • Phone application. The vacuum cleaner can be started, even if you are not at home, and it will be removed by your arrival. The mode of operation is also selected there: most often there are several of them. For example, the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro model from the Xiaomi brand supports 3 wet cleaning modes and 4 dry cleaning modes.

  • Ultraviolet lamp. It is useful in a house where small children live or have animals. The lamp disinfects the floor surface, killing harmful bacteria and microbes. This feature is available in Okami’s U100 UV Laser robot vacuum cleaner.

  • Virtual walls and forbidden lines. Through the application, you can limit the operation of the device: set fences that it will not cross.

  • Working with voice assistants. The smart assistant turns on and receives commands through Alice.

  • Cleaning without interruption. If the robot is discharged before the end of the work, it will remember where it stopped. This is convenient, as he does not have to clean the whole room again.

  • Overcoming thresholds. Some vacuum cleaners can move through interior thresholds up to 2 cm high.

  • Voice messages. The robot will speak Russian when turning on, off and other actions.

  • Base for self-cleaning. Comes with premium models. The robot dumps all the collected garbage there, as a result, it needs to be cleaned less often.

Bottom line: choose a robot vacuum cleaner wisely

  1. Of the three types of smart vacuum cleaners, you should choose the combined ones. They perform more functions. If clean floors are still more important to you, opt for a floor polishing robot.

  2. The more powerful the motor, the better the vacuum cleaner will pick up dust and debris. If possible, opt for a model with a thrust of at least 2000 Pa.

  3. Don’t forget about the battery either. It is desirable that it be 2500 mAh and higher.

  4. Give preference to a laser navigation system — then the robot will have the least hassle.

  5. The larger the trash and water containers, the less frequently they need to be emptied.

  6. It’s up to you whether you need a turbo brush, but it is necessary for cleaning carpets.

  7. Many robotic vacuum cleaners are quite noisy during operation. Check their specifications: quiet devices have a noise level of no more than 50 dB.
