Imagine: you are driving, a downpour. But the glass in front of you is clear and transparent. Drops of water seem to repel him, instantly roll off the beads to the side. You don’t even need to turn on the wipers. There is no dirt either. Say, it doesn’t happen like that? But it is precisely this effect that creates anti-rain — a new word in car cosmetics. In this article, we will talk about what kind of remedy it is and which anti-rain to choose.
How does anti-rain work?
Anti-rain is a fairly wide group of products that create a water-repellent (hydrophobic) coating. The agent is a mixture of a solvent or alcohol with polymers. During application, the drug fills microcracks and surface irregularities, the alcohol (solvent) evaporates quickly, and a very smooth protective layer is formed — an invisible polymer film, the thickness of which is calculated in nanometers. It does not allow water to spread, reducing the area of contact with it to a minimum. Water collects in balls that quickly slide off the surface under the influence of gravity or air flow. The surface remains dry and clean.
The higher the speed, the more noticeable the effect will be.
Anti-rain is used to process, first of all, windshield and side windows, as well as side mirrors. The rear window of the car remains outside the zone of air flow, and therefore the “work” of anti-rain will not be obvious there. Some compounds can be applied to plastic (headlights, motorcycle helmets) and paintwork (body).
Advantages of anti-rain:
- better visibility in bad weather;
- in the dark there are no glare on the glass from rain and wet snow;
- the frequency of use of the wiper blades is reduced and, accordingly, their wear — at a speed of more than 80 km / h, they may not be turned on;
- less consumption of washer fluid in the off-season, when, in addition to precipitation, dirt flies on the glass from under the wheels of passing cars;
- ice is much easier to remove in winter, and traces of insects in summer.
Anti-rain is a wonderful tool, but not omnipotent.
- Its action is not enough to immediately cope with a light drizzle. Small drops lack weight and remain hanging until they are blown into larger ones by the wind and blown off the glass.
- Gradually, the effect of anti-rain passes, the protective film is mechanically erased. Need to reapply.
How long does the coating last?
On the label, manufacturers, as a rule, indicate how long the “anti-rain” effect should last. It directly depends on what is included in the product: there are one-component, two- and even three-component ones. More components — the coating lasts longer, but the preparation should be more thorough before applying anti-rain. The length of the service life will affect the price.
“At the moment, there are many varieties of anti-rain on the market. The difference between the compositions is only in price and volume, the service life of the composition on the surface will also depend on the price.
Anton Churkin, Grass expert
Expensive options promise effectiveness within 3-6 months, and even up to one year. Cheap composition will last less — a week or two.
These figures are, of course, indicative, since they are calculated in laboratory conditions and cannot take into account how much dirty and clean water will fall on the glass and at what temperature the coating will be used. For example, in summer, the coating lasts longer, since the best anti-rain efficiency is observed in the temperature range from +15 to +25 ℃.
In addition, the effect of anti-rain has a cumulative effect. That is, if the car owner regularly uses this tool, the result will be more noticeable, and the intervals between treatments will be longer.
However, the high cost is not yet an absolute guarantee of high-quality and long-term operation of the anti-rain. Improper surface preparation or incorrect application technology will nullify all efforts. The purchase will turn into a waste and disappoint. Conversely, a simpler option can unexpectedly impress with the result.
How to apply anti-rain?
Be sure to read the instructions on the package. Depending on the composition, there may be specific features of the application of the agent.
Conventionally, the whole process can be divided into two stages.
Surface preparation.This is a very important step. A dirty surface will make it difficult for the polymer layer to adhere, and it will not last long. Therefore, the glass must be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Manufacturers indicate how for a particular product: simply with water, or using a soapy solution, or with a degreaser. In the latter case, it will be necessary to re-wash the glass with plenty of water after 5-10 minutes. The glass is dry.
You can also find recommendations to pre-polish the glass in a car service.
Applying the product to the surface.The product is evenly distributed on the prepared glass and quickly rubbed dry with a lint-free cloth or — again, depending on the instructions for a particular product — left to dry, and only then the whitish coating that appears is polished to transparency with a cloth. Pay special attention to the area where the wiper blades work, but don’t forget about the corners too!
The procedure according to the technology is performed once or repeated twice / thrice with a short interval.
The method of application depends on the form of anti-rain release:
- spray bottle;
- disposable capsules — the liquid is first poured onto a napkin or sponge, which is placed complete with the product;
- disposable wipes with impregnation.
Some products are designed only for glass — you will have to be careful not to let them get on plastic, rubber seal and body paint.
It is better to apply anti-rain in calm, dry weather, not in direct sunlight. Optimum — in the garage. Also consider the lower temperature threshold for application indicated on the label — some products “tolerate” +4 degrees, some require at least +10.
At first glance, all the difficulties are surmountable, but you will have to spend about an hour of your time and some amount of effort. If you are not ready, it is better to turn to professionals for a service or choose a tool with fewer technological conditions.
The best anti-rain for car glass?
Automotive stores have many varieties of anti-rain. For our part, we advise you to pay attention to the following before buying:
- Price. Still, «price = quality», albeit with some reservations.
- Ease of application. If you plan to use the tool yourself, correctly assess your strength and readiness to meticulously follow the instructions.
- Profitability. This criterion, however, can only be identified empirically or by reading detailed reviews of other car owners.
Purchase the product from trusted suppliers and well-known manufacturers who value their reputation to avoid fakes and disappointments.
And good luck!
